![]() Mission StatementMission Context StatementOne of the greatest challenges facing public policy-makers at the federal, state and local levels is to provide every child, regardless of background or ability, the best education possible. There are many factors that influence the quality of California’s public education system and the extent to which students can benefit from their time in school. Clearly, a multitude of community and environmental influences can and do impact school effectiveness. Nevertheless, our schools have a fundamental responsibility to prepare all students to fully participate in society as educated and productive citizens. The first step in meeting this goal is to provide all students with well-prepared, capable and caring teachers. Too often, however, this is not the case, especially for poor, minority and English learning students. It is in this context that the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning pursues its mission to strengthen California’s teaching profession. Mission StatementThe Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning at WestEd, was founded on the belief that the knowledge and skills of teachers are key to increasing students’ academic achievement and, therefore, should be the foundation of any effort to improve public education. The strategic purpose of the Center is to strengthen California’s teacher workforce in order to deliver a rigorous and balanced curriculum for all students, thereby supporting every child’s continued intellectual, ethical and social development.
