(Santa Cruz) Margaret Gaston, Executive Director of the Santa Cruz-based Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning, has been appointed to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing serves as the state standards board for educator preparation for the public schools of California.  The Commission is responsible for the licensing and credentialing of professional educators in the state, the enforcement of professional practices of educators, and the discipline of credential holders in California.

Ms. Gaston was appointed to a four-year term by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.  The position is unpaid.

Ms. Gaston has served as executive director and president of the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning since 1994.  The Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning is a public, not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening teacher development policy and practice.

Under her leadership, the Center has published widely recognized research that has been used by the governor and Legislature to strengthen California's teaching workforce.  Locally, the Center has sponsored the Teacher Workforce Initiative, a collaboration with the Monterey Bay Educational Consortium, to attract and keep fully prepared and effective teachers in classrooms throughout the region.
